Comparing yourself to other people is still one of my #1 pet peeves.

However in our society

And just being a human being….

It’s pretty much unavoidable

On the one hand…

It can be amazing for getting ideas and trying new things that you never would have thought of.

Social media is fab for that.

Also for the actual social side (shockingly) you can be part of awesome communities of people who hold you accountable and support you when you need a bit of a bump.

But for me, social media also has a dark side.

A side where that motivation and all of the memes and quotes and videos can become demotivating and overwhelming.

If you are constantly living in the shadow of what other people are doing you risk feeling like whatever you do is not good enough!

Because there is always someone out there one upping you.

  1. There will always be someone who has lost more weight.
  2. Who has climbed a higher mountain.
  3. Who has been able to achieve something amazing in the face of all of the odds.

Social media can be a scroll fest of the great and exotic things that are possible.

And on the one hand it’s good to know what’s out there for ideas.

But on the other hand it can set you back and you might not even make a start if. I often hear

what’s the point?’

‘It’s going on take me too long to get there’

….and I have to tell you that this thinking is a curse of competition and comparison.

Even the best of us will find this to be too much at times

Looking at someone else and feeling totally awed by them is one thing

I think it’s great to see so many people doing awesome stuff

But when your whole news feed is full of people who all seem to be doing more than you

Who seem to be getting faster results than you

Who seem to find it all easier than you…

That’s not necessarily a positive place to spend your time

If you can use social media and keep your mindset and motivation buzzing -> that’s great

But if you know that you have been feeling cowed by the sheer volume of success stories that you see

When you feel like you don’t even know where to get started….
