The post event window is generally accepted as anything from 30 mins to 24 hours after your event. Although any massage in the days after your event can technically be classed as post event and events that are particularly strenuous on the body for example marathon running or long distance triathlon might warrant extra attention in the days following.
Generally a post event massage would last about 30 minutes.
How can it help me?
I would choose specific techniques that encourage circulation in the body and therefore accelerate the recovery mechanisms within the body. The muscles are most likely to be feeling pretty tight and well used so these techniques would aim to relax the muscles and provide an element of release of tension.
How deep would you go post event?
This relies very much on the athletes tolerance and the muscle damage from the event. If there is only light tension in the muscles then there is scope for going in a bit deeper taking care not to go too deep bearing in mind the muscles have already taken a battering. This will only be done with the acceptance of the athlete, using feedback to understand what you, the athlete are feeling. The last thing I want to do is to make you feel worse!
To finish off the massage we might cover some stretches that I will put you through, the aim of which is to restore the muscles to their normal length.
