NEAT

NEAT = Non exercise activity thermogenesis

This sounds fancy and complex, but what it really means is ‘move more’.

NEAT refers to the calories burned by movement that is not specifically exercise.

You might be surprised by how much this can add up!

A 65kg person burns about 102 calories an hour when sitting at work

A 65kg person burns about 174 calories an hour when standing at work

This doesn’t seem like loads but when you extrapolate this over a working year (253 days), you get 18’000+ which equates to approx 2.5kg of fat loss.

Without taking advantage of NEAT, the same person would need to do 60 x 30 minute runs to burn the same calories ….. Woah!!

Fat loss is only one consideration though!

NEAT also reduces metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular events and death by any cause.

It isn’t difficult to take advantage of NEAT

Look for chances to move your body more

  • Take the stairs instead of the lift
  • Park further away from things
  • Stand up more and potter around
  • Take the long route to get to where you are going

It’s not hard to do this, no extra memberships are needed, there are no skills involved. Anyone can apply this to their life, and it really adds up!
