Easter message from a reformed choc-a-holic

Easter Sunday

Happy chocolate day to you

Do you know what I used to do every Easter?

I used to eat chocolate until it made me sick

I’d done this every year that I can remember

I just binge ate my Easter eggs

I had no control

My friends had their Easter delights for weeks

I was lucky if mine lasted a day or two

My parents didn’t stop me

How do you stop a kid from binge eating if they hide it?

But this behaviour followed me into adult hood

I learned to associate eating sweets and chocolate with happiness

Because sugar makes us happy in the short term

For as long as I can remember I have had issues with food and over eating

This is probably going to follow me for the rest of my life

26 years of conditioning are hard to undo

But what I do know is that I now have a much more balanced approach to life

It’s not that simple of course

I’ve developed coping mechanisms

And strategies that help me when things get hard

And you might be surprised that I still eat chocolate

But I can handle it now

Sure it’s hard sometimes

And I have to be careful

(but don’t we all have those foods that we just find insatiable?)

I gave my transformation course ladies a little Easter present

A Cadbury crème egg and a lindt bunny

Because I want to teach them that a little bit of what they enjoy

Is no bad thing

That has worked for me!

I won’t ask you to do anything that I wouldn’t do and haven’t tested

So eat some chocolate this Easter

Or at any other occasion that you fancy it

But just know this, the key word is occasionally

You can eat whatever you like – on occasion

If you indulge everyday you’ll stay fat

If you indulge occasionally you’ll be able to have the best of both worlds

Don’t let this beat you
